Selluvilla calculation

At the risk of repeating a previous post, I only report briefly to have build the ceiling structure of the second tower room yesterday. Since I don’t want to bore the few readers I have on this blog I won’t write how it’s done but rather focus on presenting the result:

Now all the ceilings are ready to blow in the insulation. I still have to do some work on the floors and then we go crazy pumping the insulation material into the gaps.

The calculation of the amount of insulation materials is not exactly rocket science but I’m still wondering whether I will get the amount anywhere close to the correct. The calculation goes roughly like this:

Firstly, you need to calculate the m3 volume you want to fill, which isn’t exactly trivial if your roof structure is a wicked as that one of Villa Linnea. Then secondly you calculate how much kg of insulation material you blow into the gaps. If you blow into a confined space, then you use up 45 kg per m3. If you blow it into an open space such as the floor then it 30 kg per m3 (uncompressed).

According to my estimates I need:

– 5.8 m3 of open space multiplied by 30 kg insulation material/m3: 174 kg

– 45.2 m3 of confined space multiplied by 45 kg insulation material/m3: 1803 kg

That gives me a total of close to 2 tons of insulation material. That’s insane! What am I doing wrong?! This stuff comes in sacks of 15kg i.e. I need some 130 sacks of material. HELP!

Have you been using any cad to draw up the space? From there the volume in m^3 is very easy to click out…

Aren’t you ordering a blower truck to come on site and just fill up the space?

    Hi,

I’ve been using the building drawings to do the calculations. Like said, not rocket science but the totals are still huge for 50cm of insulation in the roof. We were considering to call the complete truck for blowing the stuff into the ceiling. Unfortunately, the conditions for the assembly team are such that we cannot meet yet. For example, there is no decent way to walk on the second floor yet but one needs to balance of the floor beams. Also the roof structure is not exactly the traditional 2 parts roof structure, but there are several separate areas that need to be filled in the towers and the open living room. Well, for money I’m sure somebody is willing to it, but doing it oneself is significantly cheaper.
